The RTM 322 was initially designed to deliver 1,566 kW (2,100 shaft horse power) at takeoff and offers growth potential to 2,600 kW. The RTM 322 was selected to power the helicopters of 9 European armed forces, as well as Australia and New-Zealand. Following the selection by the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the Netherlands, five more countries, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Portugal, opted for the RTM 322 to power their NH 90, AW 101 Merlin or WAH-64D Longbow Apache military helicopters. The RTM 322 has established its position as the powerplant of choice in Europe for medium lift helicopters. These orders (189 firm orders and options for 71), amount to a total production of 520 engines, deliveries of which commenced in October 2002.
Also perfectly suited for the three-engine AW101 Merlin, the RTM 322 was chosen by Denmark and Portugal to power 14 and 12 Merlins respectively. The 78 new engines of this contract come in addition to the 218 engines already produced for the AW101 helicopters of the UK armed forces, which already selected the RTM 322 to power their WAH-64D Longbow Apache attack helicopters. In June 2003, the RTM322 engine was selected by the Japan Defense Agency (JDA) to power Agusta Westland’s AW101 helicopters for the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF).
In October 2004, the RTM 322 engine has been selected by the Royal Air Force of Oman to power its new fleet of 20 twin-engine NH90 multirole helicopters. In May 2005, the RTM 322 engine has been selected by the Australian Department of Defence to power its fleet of 12 NH90 (MRH90).
In July 2008, the RTM322 was ordered by France (12NH90), Belgium (8NH90) and New Zealand (9NH90).In March 2007, the Australian Department of Defence has selected the RTM322 to power another 34 MRH90 Multi-Role Helicopters.
In its different versions, the RTM 322 meets the operational requirements of the European armed forces: tactical troop transport (TTT), combat search and rescue (CSAR), escort and anti-submarine warfare (ASW).
